Open Hearth Cooking Guild

Join the Hearth Cooking Guild for an adventure in the late 18th-century Michie House. Participants prepare the entire meal over the open hearth using historical recipes and techniques. Class size is limited (4 Minimum/10 Maximum) so everyone has plenty to do and plenty to eat! Wear long pants and good shoes and come anticipating a memorable day with friends, old and new. These classes are for adults ages 18 and older.

NEW Intermediate Hearth Cooking Workshop~$60
Friday, September 27th from 6-8 pm AND Sunday, September 29th from 1-5 pm
The Friday evening lecture portion will be held at the Sargeant Museum and focuses on equipment, managing cooking spaces and temperatures, cooking fuels, and caring for cookware. It will also cover cooking techniques such as pining, planking, and spits. Participants will choose Sunday’s menu from a set of provided recipes and then assigned tasks for the next day’s hands-on workshop when they will prepare and enjoy a full meal prepared over the hearth fire.

Fall Harvest Feast~$30

Enjoy an old-time leisurely Sunday afternoon dinner reminiscent of days gone by in a historic 18th-century home. Cook over a fire at hearthside and experience how wonderful and flavorful a hearth cooked meal can be. Learn how your ancestors prepared meals and how the hearth was central to their survival. Meet in the Michie House to receive your instructions then we will be off to the hearth to prepare our delicious meal!
NEW Candlelight Colonial Desserts~$30

Celebrate the holiday season with the Hearth Cooking Guild! Learn about the festive desserts made by our ancestors to celebrate this special time of year. Make and enjoy traditional desserts in the Michie House decorated in traditional holiday decor reminiscent of the 18th  century while enjoying holiday music of the period. With sufficient quantities, you will be able to bring home samples for your family or friends to enjoy.
Festive 12th Night Fare~$30

Twelfth night was the celebratory culmination of the holiday season during the Colonial period. Experience how your ancestors celebrated the holidays with delicious fares of the times. Cook over a fire and experience the wonderful and flavorful hearth cooked meal. Learn how your ancestors prepared meals and how the hearth was central to their survival. Participants will meet in the Michie House, receive basic instruction in simple meal preparation and be assigned tasks and menu items, then gather at the end to enjoy the final results!
