TITLE: Tourism Counselor (Part-Time)
Department of Economic Development

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision provides administrative, clerical and customer service support for the Piedmont Crossroads Visitors Center. This is a highly visible role in a newly created visitors center promoting our region.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Greets and assists all walk in visitors in a friendly, courteous and professional manner in order to ensure they obtain the information they are requesting.
  2. Supports management in the day-to-day-operation of the Visitors Center, including, but not limited to, opening and closing the Center.
  3. Responsible for answering and directing all incoming calls in pleasant, professional and courteous manner promptly and either provides information to callers or refers callers to appropriate person.
  4. Acquires a thorough knowledge of tourism regarding the three regional counties in order to educate both callers and walk in visitors about local attractions.
  5. Communicates to the Regional Management Committee and other appropriate staff any issues and/or concerns regarding the Center.
  6. Interfaces with other departments and the public and serves as a liaison between citizens and other departmental personnel providing assistance.
  7. Ensures brochure displays are current.
  8. Composes and prepares notes, correspondence for management. Proofreads documents to ensure accuracy.
  9. Copies correspondence or other printed material as related to the Visitors Center.
  10. Maintains and ensures that all office documents are appropriately filed, and that record retention policies are observed for the Tourism Department and Regional Visitors Center. Entire filing system will be updated on an annual basis.
  11. Prepares outgoing mail using postage-metering machine.
  12. Opens, dates and distributes incoming mail and interoffice mail.
  13. Performs other additional duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND WORK AIDS USED IN PERFORMING THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

PC Computer, calculator, typewriter, telephone, fax machine, tape recorder, copy machine, postage machines, scanner, pens, pencils and paper.

Working Conditions and environmental hazards generally associated with the performance of the essential function of the position.

Employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: Protection from weather conditions.

Strength Requirements associated with the essential functions of the position:

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10-15 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met..

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated excellent communication skills required to deal effectively with a high volume of requests and to employ a high level of tact and diplomacy both verbally and in writing
Must have the ability to work independently and multi-task easily
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
Must be able to work a flexible schedule
Ability to listen, understand and respond appropriately
Proven ability to demonstrate professionalism, friendliness, patience, tact, diplomacy and discretion when dealing with a variety of visitors, citizens and public figures at all times
Must have a positive and upbeat attitude and convey a professional image and demeanor
Must be computer literate and be experienced with general office equipment

TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

One to three years in a customer service environment, along with a general knowledge of a variety of basic topics, such as math, reading, basic typing, etc. Person should possess the minimum of a High School diploma. Microsoft Office preferred.
